Assignment-1 (20-01-2011)
SEM-1I
CAD/CAM (2010-11)
1. (a) Explain the conventional process of the product cycle in the manufacturing environment.
(b) What are the limitations in utilizing the sweep method for geometric construction?
2. (a) What is meant by Interactive Computer Graphics? Explain its various elements.
(b) What are the hardware requirements of a Design workstation? Explain.
3. (a) What is CAD and what are its applications and benefits?
(b) Explain various Graphics Transformations with examples?
4. (a) List four reasons for implementation of CAD system?
(b) Explain the concept of obtaining a reflection about an arbitrary line starting from the plain reflection about an axis. How do you obtain the orthographic projections of 3D geometric data base?
5. (a) How do you specify a plotter for graphics application?
(b)A scaling factor of 3 is applied in the Y direction while no scaling is applied in the X direction to the line whose two end points are at coordinates (1, 4) and (5, 6). The line is to be rotated subsequently through 60o, in the counter clockwise direction. Determine the necessary transformation matrix for the operation and the new coordinates of the end points.
6. (a)Perform a 300 rotation of the triangle A (0,0), B (1,2), C (5,2) i) about
origin ii) about point P(-1,-2).
(b)Explain how the curves are represented in (i) Generic form (ii) Parametric
form.
7. (a) A physical space of (0, 0) to (225, 125) in mm is to be displayed on screen with a resolution of 1080 x 1024 pixels with an aspect ratio of 1. Find the necessary mapping required from physical coordinates to pixels. Also determine the pixel coordinates (only end points and no interpolations) of a line whose physical coordinates of end points are (55, 45) and (170, 70).
(b) Describe the types of storage devices used in computers.
8. (a) What is geometric modeling? Compare and contrast the various modeling techniques.
(b)What is the need for concatenation of transformations? Explain what care should be taken in such cases.
9. (a) What are the types of surfaces that CAD/CAM systems use?
(b) Give an example of how the centralized integrated database concept can help with the what - if situations that arise during the design process.
10. (a) How are solid modelers categorized? Explain the generic architecture of any solid modeler. Name some popular solid modelers.
(b) Explain about the display control commands, editing and dimensioning.
11. (a) Write in detail about clipping, hidden surface removal.
(b) What are the Graphics Standards? Why are they necessary for Computer Graphics?
