DesignAce-2012

DesignAce-2012
About the event:
DesignACE is the annual design contest organized by Barry-Wehmiller International Resources (BWIR).  DesignACE 2012 is the fourth edition of this contest for engineering students across South India. It is expected to become a national event in the coming years.  The contest aims to nurture and bring out the ‘design thinking’ in students and in the process enable them to exhibit their creative talent to the industry.
Students across multiple streams of engineering from all over South India will present their design concepts using a SolidWorks CAD model.  Those shortlisted in the first round will be invited to Chennai for the pre-finals session, where a live industry design problem will be given on-the-spot.  Based on the design output, eight teams would be shortlisted for the finals, where each team will present its design concepts to a jury consisting of eminent industrialists, technologists and academicians.
Through this contest, it is our endeavor to encourage students of core engineering disciplines to understand and in the process appreciate the beauty and the art of design, and explore opportunities within manufacturing and engineering.  The winners will be awarded honors and prizes worth:
 First Prize - Rs. 30000/-Second Prize - Rs. 25000/-
Third Prize - Rs. 20000/-
The top three teams, in addition to the cash prizes have also been offered a paid internship at BWIR. And if they perform well, they might even absorb for some of the most challenging assignments!
Guidelines:
The objective of Design Ace 2012 is to identify the Engineering and Design skills in engineering students and also test their conceptual skills, creativity and proficiency in using CAD tools.
Eligibility Criteria:
The contest is open to a team of two students from the same college.  The teams could be from any Engineering College across South India i.e. Tamilnadu / Kerala / Andhra Pradesh / Karnataka.  Students pursuing any engineering degree can apply.

Action Requested:
  1. All teams will have to register online @ www.bwir-designace.com. Once the teams register, they will have a unique registration code generated and sent to their email IDs within one business day. Please quote this registration number in all correspondence to BWIR. Also, please carry a print out of the registration E-mail if you are shortlisted for the final presentation
  2. Create an innovative mechanical design using SolidWorks in conformance with the theme for this year i.e. Sustainability with a short write-up.  It can either be an improvement from an existing product or a brand new product or a machine
  3. Your design will be judged based on broad use of concept, innovation, CAD usage, aesthetic appeal and usage of sustainability concepts. Additional importance will be given to designs with simulation and that use green manufacturing concepts
  4. Each team should send us one innovative design of your own for the initial short listing
  5. SolidWorks CDs have been sent across along with the notification package to the colleges.  Students can contact their Principals/HODs for this.  If the colleges have not received the notifications on time, the students can contact BWIR for the software
  6. BWIR will email the registered participants the serial code for SolidWorks Student pack complete installation which will enable them to use SolidWorks Flow Simulation & SolidWorks Sustainability
  7. The following items have to reach us at Barry-Wehmiller International Resources (BWIR) on or before August 31, 2012.  The students can either courier the complete package or can deliver the package in person at the BWIR office
  • CAD Model of the Innovative Design using SolidWorks - written on a CD/DVD
  • Drawings using SolidWorks
  • Brief write-up on the concept/mechanism behind the design
  • Explanation of the Design Calculations
  • Simulation files
  • A note on sustainability concepts adopted, if any
Please make sure, you write your registration number and college name on the CD/DVD and any printed documents that you may attach in your packages to avoid any mix-up.

BWIR will not be responsible for any postal/courier delays.  Material received after this date will not be considered for short listing.

Shortlist and Further Process:

50(Fifty) teams will be shortlisted for the second round which will be conducted at BWIR office premises in Chennai on September 21, 2012. The exact venue and timings for the second round would be communicated to the shortlisted teams through E-mail and the list will also be published on the website on September 12, 2012.

In the second round, each shortlisted team would need to solve a design problem provided by BWIR. BWIR would select 8 teams for the final round and finalists would present the solution of the design problem and their innovative design in front of the jury for about 15 minutes on September 22, 2012.  The winners will be selected by the Jury and the prize distribution will be held on the same day.

If the shortlisted teams travel from outside Chennai, to and fro second class train fare would be reimbursed on producing the tickets.  Accommodation would also be arranged by BWIR for these teams on the night of September 21, 2012.
