Mechanical Engineering
is the oldest branch in Engineering and is one of the core Engineering branches
with lot of importance in the development of the world. It is also called ever
green Mechanical in Engineering Education. This branch of Engineering is having
existence as long as there is an industrial development in this Universe. During
the course, the students of Mechanical Engineering are going to study subjects,
like Engineering Mechanics, Engineering Drawing, Engineering Metallurgy,
Machine Drawing, Manufacturing Processes, Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics, Machine
Tools and Metal Cutting, Theory of Machines, Machine Design, Thermo Dynamics,
Thermal Engineering, Heat Transfer, Automation, Operations Research, Production
Planning and Control, Unconventional Machining Processes, Robotics, Finite
Element Methods and many more. During final year, they are having a provision
for studying elective subjects, which will give exposure to latest topics.
There are various
opportunities for a Mechanical Engineering graduate in both the public sector
and private sector companies. Coming to public sector jobs, the dream of any
Mechanical Engineer is to crack Indian Engineering Service (IES) examination,
which is the gate way for many public sector engineering services, like Indian
Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME), Indian Railway Stores Service
(IRSS), Central Water Engineering Service, Central Power Engineering Service, Indian
Ordinance Factories Service, Indian Naval Armament Service, Central Electrical
& Mechanical Engineering Service, Border Roads Engineering Service, and
many more.
In-addition to the
above services, there are several public sector gaint companies, namely Oil and
Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), National
Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC), Defense Research and Development Laboratories
(DRDL), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Security Printing and
Minting Corporation of India, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), Gas
Authority of India Limited (GAIL), Bharat Heavy Plates and Vessels Limited
(BHPV), Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bharat
Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited
(HPCL), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), National Aluminum Company
Limited (NAL), Coal India Limited, Shipping Corporation of India Limited,
Dredging Corporation of India Limited, Hindustan Copper Limited, Hindustan
paper Corporation Limited, Indian Railways, Maruti Udyog Limited, Damoder
Valley Corporation, and others.
In the state level, the
students are having opportunities in APGENCO, APTRANSCO, Panchayati Raj, PWD,
Singareni Collieries, RTA, APHMEL, APSRTC and others.
Coming to the jobs in
private sector, there are hundreds of companies, which can provide
opportunities for a fresh mechanical engineering graduates. Very big companies,
like ITC, TATA Steel, TATA Motors, TATA power, Aditya Birla Group, Bajaj Auto,
Hero Motor Corp, TVS Motors, L&T, ASHOK LEYLAND, Mahindra & Mahindra, MRF
tyres, Dunlop tyres, Textile industries, Cement Industries, Steel Industries, Airlines,
Sugar Cane Industry, paper industry, Power generation, Transportation are
recruiting thousands of fresh graduates. In addition to these, so many small
and medium scale industries are also providing opportunities to graduate
Mechanical Engineers. There is also a provision for the Mechanical Engineer to start
a new firm with less investment to provide employment to others also.
The Mechanical
Engineering course is also having the flexibility to enter into most recent and
advanced technologies, like CAD/CAM, Mechatronics, Automation and Robotics. A
Mechanical Engineering graduate, who is having inclination to inter disciplinary
aspects like computers, soft-wares and electronics related subjects can opt for
the above specializations during their course of B.Tech, so that they can get
jobs in various companies utilizing advanced technology. The companies include
General Motors (GM), General Electricals (GE), Infosis, Mahindra Satyam, TCS,
Godrej, and etc. In addition to core jobs, by learning some soft-wares, the
Mechanical Engineering students can also perform well in IT Jobs.
The graduate students
of Mechanical Engineering can go for higher studies (M.Tech) in IITs, NITs and
various reputative universities. There are various specializations, like
Machine Design, Thermal Engineering, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning,
Manufacturing Engineering, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, CAD/CAM,
Automobile Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Turbo Mechanics, Aeronautical
Engineering, Rubber Technology, Maintenance Engineering in to which a
Mechanical Engineering graduate can be admitted for M.Tech course. After
completing M.Tech, the students can join the job or directly they can opt for
Ph.D also.
The graduates of
Mechanical Engineering can do MS abroad by qualifying Graduate Record
Examination (GRE) and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam. They
can choose different disciplines depending on the university. The students can
also be admitted in the five year integrated MS and Ph.D programs abroad.1
